Chapter 1: It all started from here...

Tonight, I wandered for eternity just to seek your presence. I didn't know what was coming and that made me feel all the better.

It’s been nearly two years since the disappearance of my twin brother. The police and other forms of law enforcement had long concluded his death. But I refused to believe. As twins, we always had mysterious ways of sensing each other.

I remember an occasion where my brother was beaten with a cane for flunking his Math test, and somehow I felt the same exact pain and suffering. Strange? Not really. There had been several theories and case studies regarding identical twins.

On several occasions, I have dreamt that my twin brother was calling out to me for help. I confronted my parents about it many times, but alas, they dismissed it without hesitation. Though looking back at it now, all they did was evade the question. It wasn’t until a year and couple of months later that I found the reason why.

While driving home from one of their business trips, they had encountered a traffic accident and were immediately rushed to a nearby hospital. I remembered waiting for their return, only to receive the dreadful call:

“Your parents were involved in a hit-and-run accident and are currently in critical condition. Please come to Providence General Hospital’s emergency operating room as soon as possible.”

When I got to the hospital, it was already too late. They had both passed on. I was too shock for words, too devastated to even shed a tear. I went hysterical, screaming and shouting, while questioning the police about the culprit.

“What happened to them? Were they caught?” But to my agitation, the police refused to release any information.

‘It’s just like my brother’s incident all over again! Why won’t anyone tell me anything?!’

After hours of meaningless struggle, I involuntarily left the police station, and was sent home by one of the police officers.

The next couple of days were busy ones for me. With the help of my best friend Gale, I was able to prepare for the funeral. Not many were invited to the private viewing, but those who were, attended it.

Since I was of legal age, I didn’t have imposed on an orphanage, and I immediately received my inheritance and money from life insurance.

I carried on my normal life, enrolled with one of the finest universities, to undertake the legacy left by my parents. Although the company wasn’t large and we didn’t have exorbitant number of employees, it was well managed and ranked in the top 10 in the nationwide poll as one of the best Information Technology (IT) companies.

To be honest, I never had any interest in business. Therefore taking over was one of the last things on my list. But something continued to plague my thoughts. In my parents’ will, it stated that all rights and shares of the company will be split in half between me and my twin brother, signed 3 days prior their death.

I knew that none of my questions will be answered easily. By studying and taking over the business, I could use its resources to do my own detective work.

When I got home from the meeting with the lawyers, I started rummaging through my father’s office, and little did I know, there was a hidden door behind the bookshelves.

‘What the hell is this?!’

Inside, was a long hallway that led to a strange room with 2 unique looking capsules, and a large safe, which required a drop of blood as a key for it to open?

‘Is this some kind of farce?’

I recalled my parents insisted in having a family general checkup. I thought it to be awkward and asked why. They said it was because of health purposes, and I didn’t question more, though, I should have.

I poked myself with a pocket knife and droplets of blood ran down my fingers and landed on the verification machine. The safe door opened and information that had been kept from me begun to unveil itself right before my eyes.

Letters of blackmail that had dated back 5 years ago, evidence that they were looking for information on the whereabouts of my twin brother, and videos of the places my parents had visited throughout the year during their business trip, was also among others found in the pile.

During the next couple of weeks, I secluded myself inside the storage room. I read through all the contents I found, and conducted information gathering on my own with the help of the internet, but to my disappointment, everything led to a dead end. All except my parents’ so called business trips were actually visits to one of the most popular online games, Royal Road.

I did not want to think that my parents would lie to me about their trips because they wanted time alone to play a game. There must be something more. Out of all the assumptions I had, the most logical one was maybe it has something to do with my brother which led to their death. Why else would they give half the company to a dead person knowing that they are dead?

The next couple of days, I absorbed myself extracting as much information as I could about the game and its mechanics. Luckily, the process was an easy one. The game has been out for about a year and many players were more than willing to share their knowledge.

I’ve never been a fan of computer games. I’m more of a hands-on kind of guy, who likes to get down and dirty, fighting in competitions and tournaments. So when I consulted my game addict of a best friend Gale about the game, I was not surprised when he announced that he had already begun playing the game the day it was released. He was excited that I am finally growing up to be a fine man by stepping into the world of video games.

It wasn’t all that rare to find someone who is not into games, but amongst students enrolled in my University, where playing an online game became an epidemic, finding someone who doesn’t play a video game is like finding a cure for cancer.

In three days, the capsule that I ordered arrived, and just as they promised, they set it up and prepared it for usage, and left.

I stared at the capsule with utmost animosity. I never would have thought a day in my life that my most omnipotent enemy would be a game.

In my mind, I weighed the pros and cons, and finally resigned to my fate. I got into the capsule and switched the power on.

Do you want to connect to Royal Road?

YES / NO

I sighed heavily and said “Yes.”

And that was the beginning of my journey.
